General Information on the CEP Committee
What is the CEP and who set up this committee?
Curriculum and Educational Policy (CEP). The committee was established by the faculty and is described in the SEBS Bylaws. The CEP charge is:
- Responsibilities:
- Approves new undergraduate courses, course deletions, and content changes.
- Reviews and votes on curricular program changes for SEBS Faculty approval.
- Oversees the Student to Professional Internship Network (SPIN) Program.
- Considers proposals from department chairs, program directors, deans, or university administration.
- Focus: Undergraduate education only.
Who serves on the CEP?
- Members:
- School Undergraduate Program Directors.
- Dean of Academic Programs (or designee).
- Cook Campus Dean (or designee).
- Dean of Agricultural and Urban Programs.
- Dean of International Programs.
- Two student representatives.
When does the CEP meet?
- Monthly meetings during the academic year, Wednesdays, 9:30 AM – 11:30 PM, Martin Hall or via Zoom meetings
Course and Curricular Approval Process
- Proposal reviewed and endorsed by the undergraduate program or academic department.
- Submitted to CEP for curricular and pedagogical review.
- Sent to the Undergraduate Education Council (UEC) for coordination across Rutgers New Brunswick.
- Final approval by SEBS Faculty at a faculty meeting (held twice per semester).
New Courses and Revised Courses
Does the CEP review new course proposals?
Yes.
What course changes require CEP review?
- Any change affecting the undergraduate catalog, Degree Navigator, or class schedule.
- Changes in course alignment with a major, cross-listing, course number, grading type, credits, content, or teaching method.
- Offering an existing course in a new semester (e.g., summer/winter session).
Reviving an old course?
Requires a CEP review to ensure compliance with current regulations.
Timeline for course approval
- Proposals are accepted continuously.
- Review cycle: ~2 weeks (9-10 days discussion, 4-5 days voting).
- Courses must be approved before online registration begins (March for Fall, October for Spring).
Submitting a course for CEP review
- Consult your Undergraduate Program Director (UPD).
- Get program faculty endorsement. UPD manages review.
- UPD submits the proposal to CEP.

CEP & Core Curriculum Certification
Does CEP certify core courses? No, except for Experiential Learning. Core courses are reviewed by the Core Requirements Committee (CRC).
Review of Curricula, Programs, and Educational Policies
What qualifies as an educational policy?
- Guidelines for curricular management (e.g., online/hybrid courses, Experiential Learning).
- Agreements with other institutions.
- New or revised curricula, minors, and certificates.
- Independent major requests.
New Undergraduate Programs & Major Requirement Changes
- New programs require an approved LOI and CEP approval.
- Major program requirement changes need an approved LOI and CEP approval.
- Minor program changes only need CEP approval.
Avoid Curriculum Duplication
- Engage with faculty of similar programs to prevent conflicts.
- The Undergraduate Education Council reviews proposals for potential overlap.
- Unresolved conflicts must be addressed before approval.
